Look at that creep show. He's like a weird cross between Count Chocula and a withering old Nun. For those of you who don't know him, he's Mel Kiper Jr.
What does he do for a livng? He pain stakingly analyzes and evaluates (rates) every single aspect - talent, intelligence, athletic ability - of young men coming right out of college. Sounds creepy doesn't it? It is. Not only that - he gets paid probably in the six figure amount to do this. Why? Because for some strange reason America is obsessed with the NFL Draft.
Kiper (the top 'Draft Analyist for ESPN) literally goes on ESPN virtually every day from February to the time of the draft (late April.) Sports radio shows spend hours upon hour analyzing the draft - who will get picked first? How much money will he make? Will he sign with his team or hold out?
The NFL draft is by far the most overrated event in sports. BY FAR. I know a guy who actually goes to an NFL draft party. Again, i'm all for a party, but an NFL draft party? What exactly are we celebrating there?
Woo hoo! My Detroit Lions just drafted a quarterback who MIGHT be good! YES! Our problems MAY be over! yipee!
Despite Kiper and the other experts, nobody knows anything. There's no telling whose going to be good or whose going to be bad. That's why half the first round picks end up sucking. Unlike the NBA draft, where odds are the first pick will be awesome.
The uncertainty aside, the NFL draft also takes about 893 hours to finish. For some reason every team gets 15 minutes to make their pick. 15 MINUTES! This is after months and months of interviews, personal workouts, etc. with everyone they would potentially take. Is that last 15 minutes really going to make a difference? Please. Give them three minutes. Jack Bauer can detonate a nuclear bomb in three minutes I think these chumps in the NFL can pick a player in that time.
We need to stop giving the NFL Draft so much love. I don't like seeing Mel Kiper. Dude gives me the willies.
VERDICT:
OVERRATED
